Neither Here Nor There John Suddath 9781482618358 Books

John Suddath's "Neither Here Nor There" is absolutely worth reading by anyone who wants an honest survey of what gay life was really like in The US outside of New York or Los Angeles. This is the way it was for most people who were gay in the second half of the twentieth century. Suddath is the son of a preacher who grew up mostly in Texas. It does not get more difficult than that. Yet, his parents seemed to choose ignoring his homosexuality. He did all the standard things men did at that time - joined the scouts, went to high school dances, dated, all the while sensing his gayness. College followed and then a stint in the Navy where he was an officer. His Navy years are possibly the most fascinating part of an altogether absorbing book. There seems to have been a form of "Don't ask, don't tell" already in place informally although there are chilling sequences where Naval inquisitors would sweep in and people simply disappeared from the ranks - dishonorably discharged, their lives ruined in an intolerant country. He also has struggled to reconcile his strong Christain faith with the almost certain condemnation homosexuality brings from the Christian right. In spite of all, Neither Here Nor There" is ultimately a story of hope and struggling on in the face of bigotry, serious family illness, and the desire to form a stable relationship with another man. In many ways, it is the story of being gay in America, and as such, should not be missed.

John Suddath's book is a candid account of his personal journey from youth to old age. The book illuminates the general through the specific. John's struggle to come to terms with his sexuality is complicated by two over-riding factors his introversion and his sheltered upbringing as the son of a minister. This memoir recounts John's journey, his attempts to find love, sexual satisfaction, and meaning as he experiences life in the Navy, has several partners, searches for meaningful employment, and deals with life crises including the death of his parents and sibling. The memoir is another affecting personal story of a man who faced the challenges of being gay in an unreceptive world, the challenges being even greater because John's sensitivity, his high intelligence, and his deeply embedded self-doubts and inhibitions.
